First Aid Training for Schools & Education Staff — Melbourne, Geelong & Regional Victoria

  • Classes available 7 days a Week
  • Nationally recognised certificates and qualifications
  • Flexible delivery modes available

As one of Victoria’s leading first aid training providers, Australian Pacific Training Solutions trains over 50,000 people every year, with a significant portion of these participants coming from schools and education settings. We understand the unique duty of care requirements placed on principals, teachers and education support staff, and the importance of being prepared for incidents involving children and young people. Our nationally recognised first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis courses are tailored to schools, colleges, early learning centres and OSHC services across Melbourne, Geelong and regional Victoria. Training reflects real-world school environments — from playground and sports injuries to classroom medical emergencies and excursion risks — and supports compliance with the Education and Care Services National Regulations and Ministerial Order 706 (where applicable). With APTS, your staff gain confidence, your school remains audit-ready and your students stay safer.

Popular First Aid Courses for School Staff and Education Providers

Schools must ensure staff are equipped to respond to emergencies involving students, colleagues and visitors — whether in the classroom, on the playground or on excursions. We offer a comprehensive range of nationally recognised courses commonly required in Victorian education settings, including first aid, CPR, asthma, anaphylaxis and emergency management training. These qualifications help schools maintain compliance, meet duty of care obligations and strengthen the confidence of teachers and education support staff to act quickly when it matters most.

Why education teams choose our short courses

Long qualifications are fine for building a career, but they're not the answer to urgent safety issues.

School leaders often have to deal with:

  • Expired first aid certificates
  • Training new staff quickly
  • Making sure they've got duty-of-care covered under the National Quality Framework
  • Looking after staff and kids with asthma, anaphylaxis, playground injuries and sport injuries

Our short courses build the essential first aid skills that staff can use straight away.

Early childhood course types delivered by APTS

Nationally approved childcare first aid training — these courses build first aid and emergency response skills, all in line with national rules for education and care settings.

Online awareness training — online courses are brilliant for new staff training and refreshers. Schools often use them on pupil-free days.

Early childhood first aid courses that schools commonly book

Childcare first aid and emergency response

These courses get childcare workers ready to handle emergencies confidently.

HLTAID012 is specifically designed for childcare and education settings — it covers asthma management, anaphylaxis, and child-focused emergency response.

Training includes:

  • Performing CPR on children and adults
  • Using an automated external defibrillator
  • Managing asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies
  • Handling common injuries

Facility emergencies and evacuation readiness

Schools need clear emergency response skills to stay safe.

  • PUAFER004 Respond to Facility Emergencies
  • PUAFER005 Warden
  • PUAFER006 Chief Warden
  • PUAFER008 Confine Small Workplace Emergencies

These courses teach staff what to do in a facility emergency and how to work with emergency services.

Manual handling and staff safety

Early learning centres involve regular manual handling and physical movement.

  • HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely

This training helps build hands-on skills that reduce injuries.

Mental health and wellbeing training

Childcare professionals support students with behaviour and wellbeing challenges every day.

  • Mental health awareness
  • Youth mental health support
  • Workplace wellbeing training

How often should schools renew first aid training?

Schools need to keep their staff's skills current. Following Australian Resuscitation Council guidance:

  • Refresh CPR every 12 months
  • Renew first aid certificates every 3 years

Some schools do it more often, depending on their risk, student needs or school policy. Having a clear renewal schedule stops expired certificates turning up during audits.

Which early childhood course is right for your school?

Choose the one that suits your school's risk level and staff roles.

If you need first aid coverage fast

Go with:

  • HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting
  • HLTAID009 CPR
  • Basic emergency life support skills

These courses teach staff to perform CPR and handle emergencies.

If your setting has higher risk

Consider:

  • HLTAID014 Advanced First Aid
  • HLTAID015 Advanced Resuscitation

These are ideal for large campuses or sport-focused schools.

If your school has wardens

Emergency training helps staff guide evacuations and work with emergency services.

If you need flexible delivery

Online learning is perfect for building key skills without taking teachers out of the classroom.

Common compliance gaps in schools

Lots of schools struggle with:

  • CPR renewals expiring while first aid remains valid
  • Casual staff missing out on training
  • Not having a clear yearly training plan
  • Online-only training when hands-on assessment is needed

Plan group sessions each year and you'll reduce these risks.

What auditors check

Auditors will be looking for:

  • Current HLTAID012 certificates
  • CPR refreshers within 12 months
  • Clear training records
  • Evidence of practical assessment
  • Staff who can handle emergencies confidently

Training helps with compliance, but schools must also keep clear records and follow their risk plans.

Designed for schools and care settings

Schools need specific, context-aware training. Staff handle:

  • Child-focused emergencies
  • National Quality Framework rules
  • Duty-of-care responsibilities
  • Real scenarios in childcare centres and schools

APTS is a registered training organisation that understands education workers.

Online learning vs face-to-face training

Online learning is great for:

  • Mental health awareness
  • Fire awareness and policy refresher sessions

Hands-on training is mandatory for:

  • CPR — you can't learn this from a textbook
  • First aid emergencies — real situations require real skills
  • Defibrillator use — staff need to actually use one so they know how it feels

Practical assessments show that staff can handle a real emergency.

Keeping staff on track without sending your school into chaos

Set a clear baseline for training. For example:

  • Teachers and aides: HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting
  • Designated responders: advanced resuscitation skills
  • Emergency wardens: PUAFER warden training

Use pupil-free days to get your staff trained up. Group sessions mean everyone gets the training without taking teachers out of the classroom.

Keep track of certifications too — APTS issues them promptly after the course is done.

Frequently Asked Questions for Schools

What first aid qualifications do school staff need?

Victorian schools must ensure key staff hold HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (including HLTAID009 CPR) and relevant asthma and anaphylaxis qualifications such as 22556VIC and 22578VIC. For full guidance on training obligations, refer to our resource:
First Aid Training Requirements for Victorian Schools
We help you determine exactly which qualifications your school needs and streamline enrolment for all required staff.

How often does first aid training need to be renewed in schools?

The recommended renewal cycle in Victorian schools is:

  • CPR every 12 months
  • First Aid every 3 years
  • Asthma & Anaphylaxis training every 3 years (with 6-monthly practice updates)
    View full compliance renewal timelines
Our Client Portal automatically tracks expiries and sends advance reminders to ensure no compliance lapses.

Can you train our entire school staff simultaneously?

Yes. We can train 350+ staff at once, deploying multiple trainers and maintaining a maximum 1:25 ratio per trainer — ideal for student-free days.
After training, all records and certificates are available instantly through your Client Portal, ensuring fast audit-ready compliance.

Do you provide public course options for individual staff members?

Absolutely. New starters, relief staff and those who miss the group session can easily attend a public first aid course at one of our Melbourne, Geelong or regional venues. Their certification is automatically visible in the Client Portal so your compliance dashboard always stays up to date.

What support do you provide for compliance and audits?

Our Client Portal gives your school secure access to:

  • Instant certificate downloads for every trained staff member
  • Expiry alerts and automated renewal reminders
  • Audit-ready compliance reports
  • Centralised data across multi-campus networks

No more spreadsheets — everything is ready when you need it.

How far in advance should we book training? And how does the Client Portal help?

We recommend booking 3–6 weeks in advance for large groups or student-free days. Once scheduled, all staff enrolments, attendance, certificates and renewals are fully managed in the Client Portal — saving significant admin time.

December Bookings and January PD Day Bookings - these periods are the highest demand for training, most clients booking 6-12 months in advance to secure their preferred date and time. Please discuss your needs as early as possible if you need training during these periods.

What space and resources does the school need to provide?

Just a clean indoor area with adequate seating and floor space for practical activities. We bring all first aid training equipment, manikins and materials. Certificates and reporting are automatically uploaded to your Client Portal after your session. For large bookings, our preference is for each group (up to 25) to be split into their own room to ensure maximum trainer engagment.

Can you tailor training to student health needs or support multi-campus schools?

Yes — we often tailor training to support schools with specific medical risk profiles (e.g., allergies, asthma, diabetes, special needs).
Multi-campus providers benefit from centralised training visibility and scheduling via the Client Portal, making system-wide compliance management far easier.

Why train all staff, not just first aid officers?

Many Victorian schools choose to train all staff, helping ensure safer supervision on playgrounds, excursions and extracurricular activities. This approach also strengthens audit evidence and reduces operational risk.
