Is HLTAID011 the Right First Aid Course for You?
HLTAID011 is designed for general workplace and community first aid needs. It develops the knowledge and practical skills required to recognise an emergency, provide an appropriate first aid response and support a casualty until further assistance is available.
The course may be appropriate if you:
- are a nominated workplace first aider
- need first aid training for your job
- are refreshing previously completed first aid training
- work in health, community services, disability support or aged care
- are a manager, supervisor or team leader
- volunteer in a sporting, community or not-for-profit organisation
- want practical first aid skills for personal preparedness.
There are no formal academic prerequisites specified for the unit. Learners must still meet the physical, practical, knowledge and administrative requirements of the course.
Your employer, regulator or professional body may require a different or more specific unit. Completing HLTAID011 does not guarantee that it satisfies every workplace, licensing or professional requirement.
HLTAID009 vs HLTAID011 vs HLTAID012
Choosing the correct course before enrolling can save you from completing training that does not match your role.
Course | When it may be appropriate |
HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation | You only need CPR training or a CPR refresher |
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid | You need general workplace or community first aid training, including CPR |
HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting | You work in an education and care setting where this specific unit is required (early childhood) |
If you work in childcare, early learning or another education and care setting, check whether HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting is required before booking HLTAID011.
How Is the First Aid Course Delivered?
APTS currently offers several delivery options for HLTAID011. The amount of trainer-led and face-to-face time depends on the format selected.
Face-to-Face First Aid Training
The standard face-to-face course combines theory, trainer instruction, hands-on training, practical scenarios and assessment.
The published minimum contact time is 7 hours and 30 minutes.
This option suits learners who prefer to complete their learning and practical assessment with a trainer in person.
Blended First Aid Training
Blended delivery combines pre-course or online theory with a required practical session.
The published minimum face-to-face contact time is 6 hours, with required pre-course learning completed separately.
Any required online learning should be completed before attending the practical component.
Refresher First Aid Training
A refresher pathway may be available for people updating previously completed first aid skills.
The published minimum face-to-face contact time is 6 hours.
Check the booking requirements before selecting a refresher option, including whether evidence of previous training is required.
Online Learning With Face-to-Face Assessment
This option allows learners to complete theory online before attending the required practical assessment.
The published minimum face-to-face assessment time is 2 hours.
This is not a fully online first aid course. Completing the theory component alone does not satisfy the practical requirements of HLTAID011.
You need access to an internet-connected computer, smartphone, tablet or similar device where online learning applies.
What Does the HLTAID011 First Aid Course Cover?
HLTAID011 prepares learners to recognise and respond to a range of emergency situations using first aid principles and Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.
Training covers how to:
- recognise and assess an emergency
- identify hazards and protect yourself, the casualty and others
- seek assistance from emergency services
- assess an unconscious casualty
- follow the DRSABCD action plan
- perform CPR
- use an automated external defibrillator
- manage choking
- respond to asthma and anaphylaxis
- manage bleeding and shock
- respond to wounds and burns
- manage fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
- respond to relevant envenomation
- monitor a casualty until further help arrives
- communicate information to emergency services
- complete a first aid incident report
- review the first aid response after an incident.
Knowledge requirements also address first aid considerations for conditions such as cardiac emergencies, diabetes, drowning, eye injuries, poisoning, seizures, stroke, temperature-related illness and head, neck or spinal injuries.
The course is designed to develop practical first aid skills, not simply theoretical knowledge.
CPR and Practical Assessment Requirements
CPR training is a required part of HLTAID011.
Learners must demonstrate CPR on adult and infant resuscitation manikins as part of the practical assessment.
For adult CPR, the assessment includes at least two minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor.
Learners must also demonstrate appropriate use of an AED and management of an unconscious casualty.
Infant CPR requires at least two minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on an infant manikin placed on a firm surface.
These physical skills must be demonstrated to the required standard. Theory alone cannot replace the practical CPR assessment.
If an injury, disability or other condition may affect your ability to perform CPR on the floor or complete another practical assessment task, contact APTS before enrolling to discuss learner support. Support arrangements cannot remove mandatory competency requirements.
How Is HLTAID011 Assessed?
Successful completion requires both practical and knowledge assessment.
Practical Assessment
Practical assessment activities include:
- adult CPR
- infant CPR
- use of an AED
- recovery-position procedures
- anaphylaxis response
- asthma response
- choking management
- bleeding and shock management
- minor wound care
- nosebleed management
- fractures and dislocations
- sprains and strains
- relevant envenomation response
- simulated first aid scenarios
- completion of a first aid incident report.
Learners may use training equipment such as adult and infant manikins, AED training devices, bandages, wound dressings, asthma training equipment and adrenaline auto-injector trainers.
Knowledge Assessment
Learners also complete a written theory assessment using multiple-choice questions.
Attendance does not automatically result in competency or certification. Learners must successfully meet all applicable practical, knowledge and administrative requirements before the nationally recognised outcome can be awarded.
What Do I Need to Do Before the Course?
Preparation depends on the delivery option you select.
Complete Required Pre-Course Learning
Where online or pre-course learning applies, complete it before attending your practical session.
Follow the instructions provided after enrolment. Completing online theory alone does not complete the course.
Have Your USI Ready
A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required for nationally recognised training. This will be entered via the online enrolment confirmation process which should be completed prior to your face to face session.
A valid USI must be provided before a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment can be issued.
Check Your Booking Information
Review your enrolment confirmation and the APTS Course Booking Information for any identification or course-specific preparation requirements.
Identification requirements can vary, so follow the instructions supplied for your booking rather than assuming the same requirement applies to every course.
Wear Suitable Clothing and Footwear
Wear clothing and footwear that allow you to participate safely and comfortably in practical first aid activities.
This is particularly important because the assessment includes floor-based adult CPR.
What Do You Receive After Successful Completion?
Learners who successfully meet the required assessment and administrative requirements receive nationally recognised outcomes for:
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
- HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support
- HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
The nationally recognised Statement of Attainment is issued through Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909.
Learners can access digital training records and certificates through Training Desk, which supports enrolments, course history and certificate access.
A Statement of Attainment can only be issued after the relevant competency and administrative requirements have been met. Attendance, payment or completion of online theory alone does not guarantee certification.
How Often Should First Aid Training Be Refreshed?
Current Australian first aid guidance commonly recommends refreshing:
- first aid skills approximately every three years
- CPR skills every 12 months.
These are refresher and skills-currency recommendations. They should not be treated as a universal legal expiry date for every first aid certificate.
Your employer, industry or regulator may set its own training or currency requirements.
If you only need to refresh CPR, consider HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation rather than repeating the full first aid course unnecessarily.
