Is HLTAID009 the Right Course for You?

Choose HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation when you specifically need CPR training or a CPR refresher.

If your employer has asked for a broader first aid certificate, CPR alone may not be enough.

CPR only: HLTAID009

HLTAID009 focuses on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and related emergency-response skills.

Basic emergency life support: HLTAID010

HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support includes HLTAID009 and adds broader basic emergency life support skills.

General workplace first aid: HLTAID011

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the broader first aid option. It includes HLTAID009 CPR as well as skills for responding to a wider range of injuries and medical emergencies.

Education and care settings: HLTAID012

People working in childcare or education and care settings may need HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting, depending on their role and workplace requirements.

If you are unsure, check the exact unit code with your employer before enrolling or view all first aid courses.

What Will You Learn?

The course develops the practical skills and knowledge required to respond to a casualty who is unconscious and may require CPR.

Training includes how to:

  • recognise and assess an emergency situation;
  • follow the DRSABCD action plan;
  • check an unconscious casualty;
  • access emergency services;
  • perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • provide CPR to adults and infants;
  • use an automated external defibrillator;
  • follow appropriate infection-control procedures;
  • place an appropriate casualty into the recovery position;
  • respond to regurgitation or vomiting during CPR;
  • rotate rescuers while reducing interruptions to compressions;
  • communicate with emergency services; and
  • provide an accurate verbal handover after the incident.

The unit also covers relevant CPR techniques for adults, children and infants.

Choose Your CPR Training Delivery Mode

The best delivery option depends on your previous experience, preferred learning style and how much self-directed study you want to complete before attending.

Face-to-Face CPR Training

The standard face-to-face option has a minimum scheduled duration of 2 hours.

Theory, hands-on practice, practical scenarios and assessment are completed with a trainer. This format may suit learners who prefer to complete their learning in a trainer-led environment rather than undertaking online pre-course learning.

Blended CPR Training

Blended delivery has a minimum 90-minute scheduled face-to-face component.

You complete required online pre-course learning before attending the practical session. This reduces scheduled classroom time, but it does not mean the total course commitment is only 90 minutes.

CPR Refresher Course

The refresher option has a minimum 90-minute scheduled face-to-face component.

It may suit learners who already have CPR training experience and need to refresh their competency. Previous experience does not remove the requirement to successfully complete the current assessment tasks.

Online Learning With Face-to-Face Assessment

This option has a minimum 45-minute scheduled face-to-face assessment component.

You complete the required theory online before attending the practical assessment. Online learning may be completed at your own pace within the requirements provided after enrolment.

This is not a fully online CPR course. Practical skills must still be demonstrated face-to-face.

CPR Practical Assessment Requirements

HLTAID009 requires learners to demonstrate CPR skills in a practical assessment. Attendance alone is not enough to be assessed as competent.

Adult CPR Assessment

You must perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on an adult manikin positioned on the floor.

The practical assessment also includes skills such as:

  • performing effective CPR;
  • using an AED and following its prompts;
  • changing rescuers while minimising interruptions to compressions;
  • responding to regurgitation or vomiting;
  • placing an appropriate casualty into the recovery position; and
  • providing an oral handover to emergency services.

Infant CPR Assessment

You must also demonstrate at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant manikin positioned on a firm surface.

Knowledge Assessment

Learners must also complete the required knowledge assessment.

To successfully complete the course, you must meet the applicable knowledge, practical and administrative requirements.

Can You Meet the Physical CPR Assessment Requirements?

The adult CPR assessment must be completed at floor level.

Before booking, make sure you can:

  • get into a suitable position beside an adult manikin on the floor;
  • perform chest compressions and ventilations;
  • continue CPR for at least 2 minutes without interruption; and
  • complete the required practical assessment tasks.

If an injury, disability or medical issue may affect your ability to complete the floor-based assessment, contact APTS before enrolling.

APTS can discuss your circumstances and available learner support, but reasonable adjustment cannot remove the mandatory competency requirements of the unit.

Before You Book

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisite units listed for HLTAID009.

You must still meet the enrolment, assessment and administrative requirements for the course.

Unique Student Identifier

A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required before a Statement of Attainment for nationally recognised training can be issued.

Online Pre-Course Learning

If you select a blended or online-learning delivery mode, required pre-course learning must be completed before the practical component where instructed.

Completing online theory alone does not complete the unit.

Digital Access

Learners completing online learning need suitable internet access and enough digital literacy to use the online learning system.

Identification

Identity or enrolment verification requirements may apply.

Check your confirmation and Course Booking Information before attending so you know what to bring.

Clothing and Footwear

Wear clothing and footwear suitable for practical CPR activities, including kneeling and working at floor level.

Minimum Age

Whilst there is no minimum age specified for this course it is not recommended for children under 12 years old

CPR Refresher and Renewal Guidance

The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that CPR skills be refreshed at least annually.

Workplace first aid arrangements may also require staff to maintain current CPR competency depending on their role and workplace requirements.

This does not mean a Statement of Attainment simply expires after 12 months. The Statement records successful completion of the nationally recognised unit. Employers, professional bodies and workplace procedures may separately specify how recent CPR training needs to be.

If you require CPR for employment or professional purposes, confirm the renewal requirements that apply to your role.

What Do You Receive After Successful Completion?

Learners who successfully complete the required knowledge, practical and administrative requirements receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Australian Pacific Training Solutions delivers and assesses the training on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909.

Learners can access digital training records and certificates through Training Desk.

A Statement of Attainment is not issued simply because a learner attended or paid for the course. The required competency and administrative requirements must first be met.

Group and Workplace CPR Training

Managing CPR training for a team?

APTS offers group bookings and onsite workplace training for organisations, subject to course, trainer and location availability.

Group CPR training may be useful for organisations managing:

  • workplace first aid officers;
  • annual CPR refresher cycles;
  • new starters;
  • multiple work shifts;
  • healthcare or community services teams;
  • education and care staff; or
  • employees across several public-course dates.

For larger teams, APTS may be able to deliver training onsite and contextualise practical scenarios to the workplace while preserving the assessment requirements of HLTAID009.

Public courses can also be used for staff who miss a group session, join the organisation later or need training outside the main workplace booking.

When making a group enquiry, it is useful to have:

  • approximate participant numbers;
  • preferred location;
  • preferred dates or timing;
  • whether onsite or public-course delivery is preferred; and
  • any relevant workplace scheduling requirements.

Specific availability, group requirements and delivery arrangements should be confirmed with APTS.

Why Train With APTS?

APTS provides practical training across first aid, emergency response and workplace skills.

APTS instructors have professional backgrounds across areas including healthcare, emergency response, fire services and community care. Training is designed to be practical, interactive and relevant to workplace situations.
