Who Should Complete This Course?

HLTAID015 may be suitable where a person's role requires advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy skills beyond standard CPR.

Depending on workplace and role requirements, participants may include:

  • designated workplace first aiders
  • experienced first aiders
  • emergency response personnel
  • healthcare and community services workers
  • safety personnel
  • aquatic and recreation staff
  • event personnel
  • workers in high-risk environments
  • people responsible for advanced first aid or emergency response equipment

A job title alone does not mean someone automatically requires this course. Employer, industry and regulatory requirements can differ.

If you are completing training for work, confirm the required unit with your employer, professional body or relevant authority before booking.

HLTAID015 vs HLTAID009 CPR

HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation focuses on CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator.

HLTAID015 builds on those core resuscitation skills by adding advanced techniques and specialised equipment.

If you only need CPR and AED skills, HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation may be the more appropriate course.

If you need broader first aid skills for managing complex incidents and casualties, consider HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid.

If you require both HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid and HLTAID015 Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy, these are offered as a combined course removing any overlapping content.

What Will You Learn and Practise?

The course develops the skills and knowledge required to assess an emergency, manage a casualty and determine when CPR, advanced resuscitation or oxygen therapy is needed.

Training covers areas such as:

  • assessing an emergency situation
  • protecting yourself, bystanders and the casualty
  • managing an unconscious casualty
  • performing CPR
  • using an automated external defibrillator
  • two-rescuer resuscitation
  • bag-valve-mask ventilation
  • using an appropriate basic airway adjunct
  • assessing respirations, pulse and oxygen saturation
  • using a pulse oximeter
  • preparing oxygen equipment
  • providing supplemental oxygen
  • responding to life-threatening bleeding
  • monitoring a casualty
  • communicating with emergency services
  • completing workplace incident documentation
  • checking and maintaining resuscitation equipment after use

Training and assessment are conducted in line with the requirements of the unit and relevant Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.

What Must You Demonstrate in Assessment?

Assessment is not based on attendance alone. Participants must demonstrate the required skills and knowledge to be assessed as competent.

Adult CPR and Advanced Resuscitation

Participants are required to demonstrate at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor.

Assessment also includes two-rescuer resuscitation using:

  • chest compressions
  • bag-valve-mask ventilation
  • oxygen
  • an AED

Participants must demonstrate how to change rescuers while limiting interruptions to CPR and follow the required resuscitation procedures.

Infant CPR

Participants are also assessed performing CPR on an infant manikin placed on a firm surface.

Knowledge requirements address CPR procedures for adults, children and infants.

Oxygen Therapy

Participants demonstrate the use of oxygen equipment, including assessing the casualty and preparing the equipment required to provide supplemental oxygen.

This can include:

  • assessing respirations
  • checking pulse and oxygen saturation
  • assessing level of consciousness
  • using a pulse oximeter
  • selecting an appropriate oxygen delivery device
  • checking the surrounding area for hazards
  • setting up oxygen equipment
  • providing oxygen at the required flow rate
  • monitoring the casualty
  • responding to equipment problems

Completing this training does not give unrestricted authority to administer oxygen in every workplace or situation. Participants must continue to work within their role, training, workplace procedures and applicable requirements.

Life-Threatening Bleeding

Assessment also covers the management of life-threatening bleeding.

This can include the use of:

  • personal protective equipment
  • tourniquets
  • haemostatic dressings
  • appropriate casualty monitoring

Airway Problems During Resuscitation

Participants need to respond appropriately if regurgitation or vomiting occurs during resuscitation.

This can involve positioning the casualty and using suction equipment to help clear the airway while continuing to manage the emergency.

These scenarios help assess whether a participant can apply their skills in complex situations rather than only performing CPR under ideal conditions.

What Equipment Is Used?

HLTAID015 involves practical training and assessment using specialised equipment.

Equipment relevant to the unit can include:

  • adult and infant resuscitation manikins
  • AED training devices
  • bag-valve-mask equipment
  • basic airway adjuncts
  • oxygen resuscitation equipment
  • oxygen cylinder and regulator
  • oxygen masks and tubing
  • pulse oximeter
  • suction equipment
  • tourniquets
  • haemostatic dressings
  • personal protective equipment

Participants also learn how to check, clean and prepare relevant resuscitation equipment after use.

This may include:

  • dismantling equipment
  • cleaning and decontamination
  • safe disposal of used consumables
  • identifying faults
  • troubleshooting equipment
  • replenishing supplies
  • storing equipment correctly
  • returning equipment to operational readiness

Course Delivery and Duration

APTS currently offers two delivery options for this course.

Face-to-Face Training

The minimum face-to-face contact time is 6 hours.

Theory, practical activities and assessment are completed with a trainer.

Online Learning With Face-to-Face Assessment

The minimum face-to-face assessment contact time is 90 minutes.

Participants complete the required online or pre-course study before attending the practical assessment.

APTS provides pre-course study online after enrolment where it applies. It must be completed before attending the practical component.

This is not a fully online course. Practical competency must be demonstrated in person.

Prerequisite and Entry Requirements

The formal prerequisite is:

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

It must be completed prior to undertaking HLTAID015 and must be within the 3 year industry recommended renewal period.

Participants also need to meet the practical and administrative requirements of nationally recognised training.

Physical Requirements

Participants must have the physical capacity to perform the required practical demonstrations.

This includes completing two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

A participant who cannot meet a mandatory practical assessment requirement cannot be deemed competent solely because they attended the course or require the unit for employment.

Online Learning Requirements

If completing an online or pre-course component, participants need access to:

  • an internet connection
  • a computer, smartphone, tablet or similar electronic device

Participants should complete all required online study before attending the practical assessment.

Unique Student Identifier

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required for nationally recognised training before a Statement of Attainment can be issued.

Identification

Participants may be required to provide identification on the day of training. Accepted identification can include documents such as a driver's licence, passport or Medicare card.

Check your enrolment information before attending for the requirements that apply to your booking.

Learning Support

If a participant may have a barrier to learning or needs reasonable training support, APTS asks that this be raised before the course date.

Support can help a learner participate in training, but it does not remove mandatory competency or practical assessment requirements.

Assessment Methods

Participants complete both knowledge and practical assessment.

Assessment methods include:

  • a written assessment with multiple-choice questions
  • practical demonstrations
  • performance tasks
  • simulated emergency scenarios
  • adult CPR
  • infant CPR
  • two-rescuer advanced resuscitation
  • oxygen and resuscitation equipment use
  • life-threatening bleeding management
  • incident reporting
  • equipment maintenance

Simulated scenarios are used so participants can apply their skills in situations that reflect community and workplace settings.

Successful Completion and Statement of Attainment

Participants must successfully meet the required knowledge, practical competency and administrative requirements before the course outcomes can be awarded.

Successful participants receive a Statement of Attainment issued by Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909 listing:

  • HLTAID015 Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy
  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Australian Pacific Training Solutions delivers and assesses the training on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909.

After the course, eligible participants are advised by email when their certificate is available through their Training Desk portal. Organisation contacts can also access certificates for participants in their group booking through Training Desk where applicable.

Attendance, payment or an employment requirement does not guarantee competency or the issue of a Statement of Attainment.

Keeping CPR and Resuscitation Skills Current

The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that people trained in CPR refresh their CPR skills at least annually.

This is a skills currency recommendation. It does not mean every HLTAID015 Statement of Attainment automatically expires after 12 months.

Licensing, workplace, professional and industry requirements may impose their own refresher or currency expectations.

Check the requirements that apply to your role with your employer or relevant authority.
