Is HLTAID014 the Right Course for You?
HLTAID014 is intended for people who need more than general workplace first aid.
It may be appropriate for:
- designated workplace first aiders
- supervisors and managers with emergency responsibilities
- emergency response personnel
- workers in higher-risk environments
- healthcare and community-service workers where the unit suits their role
- teams that may need to manage complex situations or multiple casualties
- learners progressing beyond HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
The need for advanced training depends on your role, workplace hazards, access to emergency services and organisational requirements. Completing HLTAID014 does not provide the authority of a paramedic, nurse or other regulated health professional.
If your employer only requires general workplace first aid,HLTAID011 Provide First Aid may be the more suitable option.
HLTAID011 vs HLTAID014
The main difference is the breadth of the response you are trained and assessed to manage.
Comparison point | HLTAID011 Provide First Aid | HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid |
Main focus | General workplace and community first aid | Broader casualty management and incident coordination |
CPR | Included | Included |
Common injuries and medical emergencies | Included | Included |
Life-threatening bleeding | Covered | Greater emphasis within current APTS practical assessment |
Multiple casualties | General emergency response | Includes coordination of a multiple-casualty scenario |
Resource coordination | Basic response | Greater focus on deploying available resources and coordinating aid activities |
Best fit | General workplace first aider | Roles requiring broader emergency capability |
HLTAID014 builds on standard first aid training by requiring learners to assess an emergency, provide an advanced first aid response and coordinate assistance until medical or other assistance is available.
The current APTS program also delivers:
- HLTAID014 ā Provide Advanced First Aid
- HLTAID011 ā Provide First Aid
- HLTAID010 ā Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
- HLTAID009 ā Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
What Does the Course Cover?
The course develops the skills and knowledge required to assess emergencies, manage more complex casualties and coordinate a response while waiting for further medical assistance.
Rather than repeating every standard first aid topic, the most important differences for HLTAID014 are the broader assessment, coordination and practical response requirements.
Advanced casualty assessment and response
Learners develop skills to:
- recognise an emergency situation
- assess hazards and immediate risks
- assess casualties and identify priorities
- seek medical or other assistance
- follow relevant first aid procedures
- monitor a casualty's condition
- communicate with emergency services
- work with other first aiders where required
- coordinate available first aid activities and resources
The aim is to make safe decisions within the scope of a trained first aider, not to provide clinical treatment beyond the unit.
Serious injuries and medical emergencies
Current APTS training and assessment includes responses to situations such as:
- severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
- asthma
- choking
- non-life-threatening bleeding
- life-threatening bleeding
- shock
- wounds and nosebleeds
- fractures and dislocations
- sprains and strains
- spinal injuries
- snake and funnel-web spider envenomation
- environmental emergencies such as hypothermia and hyperthermia
Learners also practise techniques for managing severe bleeding, including the appropriate use of available equipment such as tourniquets and haemostatic dressings.
Multiple casualties and incident coordination
A major difference between general and advanced first aid is the requirement to manage priorities when more than one casualty is involved.
The current practical assessment includes a scenario where learners coordinate a multiple-casualty incident. This may involve assessing priorities, working with other first aiders, deploying available resources and continuing care until medical assistance arrives.
This type of scenario-based assessment tests whether the learner can apply first aid skills in a realistic emergency, rather than only recall theory.
CPR and resuscitation skills
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation remains a core part of the training.
Learners are assessed in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. Current APTS requirements include:
- adult CPR
- infant CPR
- automated external defibrillator use
- recovery position
- associated incident reporting
Learners must perform two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin positioned on the floor.
This is a mandatory practical assessment requirement. Learners must have the physical capacity to complete it.
First aid equipment and resources
HLTAID014 also includes the use of available first aid equipment and resources.
This can include standard supplies and ancillary first aid equipment appropriate to the situation. Equipment must be used according to relevant procedures and manufacturer instructions.
HLTAID014 should not be confused withHLTAID015 Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy.
HLTAID015 specifically focuses on advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy using specialised equipment.
If oxygen therapy or advanced resuscitation is required for your role, confirm whether you need HLTAID015 separately or as part of a combined training pathway.
Entry and Learner Requirements
The current APTS information does not list another unit of competency as a formal prerequisite for HLTAID014.
Learners must, however, be able to complete the required learning and assessment tasks.
Current requirements include:
- physical ability to demonstrate all required practical skills
- ability to complete two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor
- access to a suitable internet-connected device when using the online pathway
- completion of required pre-course learning before the practical component where applicable
- a valid Unique Student Identifier for the issue of nationally recognised training documentation
A USI is required before a Statement of Attainment can be issued.
How Is HLTAID014 Assessed?
Successful completion requires both practical and knowledge assessment.
The current APTS assessment includes practical demonstrations, simulated emergencies and a written theory assessment.
Practical activities include:
- adult CPR and AED use
- infant CPR
- recovery position
- anaphylaxis
- asthma
- choking
- bleeding and shock
- wounds and nosebleeds
- fractures and dislocations
- sprains and strains
- envenomation
- life-threatening bleeding
- coordination of a multiple-casualty incident
- incident reporting
Role plays and simulated scenarios allow students to demonstrate how they would respond to medical and trauma incidents in realistic conditions.
Being present for the training is not enough on its own. Learners must successfully complete the required theory and practical assessment tasks before competency can be awarded.
Worried About the Theory or Practical Assessment?
The word āadvancedā can make HLTAID014 sound more clinical than it is.
The course does include more detailed casualty assessment, emergency coordination and practical scenarios than general first aid training. However, it remains a first aid unit and does not qualify you as a healthcare professional.
A useful way to approach the learning is to focus on the response sequence:
- recognise the emergency
- identify hazards
- assess the casualty or casualties
- call for appropriate assistance
- provide care within your training
- monitor changes
- coordinate people and available resources
- document and review the incident
The practical session then gives students an opportunity to apply this knowledge through simulated emergencies and hands-on assessment.
If you have literacy, language, digital-learning or other barriers that may affect your participation, discuss them with APTS before training. Learner support may be available, but mandatory competency requirements cannot be removed.
What Do Successful Learners Receive?
Participants who successfully complete all required assessments and administrative requirements receive the applicable nationally recognised units through Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909.
The current APTS program includes:
- HLTAID014 ā Provide Advanced First Aid
- HLTAID011 ā Provide First Aid
- HLTAID010 ā Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
- HLTAID009 ā Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
A Statement of Attainment is issued only after the required competency and administrative conditions have been met.
Learners can access digital training records and documentation throughTraining Desk.
Certificate issue timing: Certificates are generally issued on the day of training however, in some cases may take up to 7 days. Please let your Trainer know if your certificate is urgent.
Refresher and Renewal Guidance
It is more accurate to talk about maintaining current skills than to say HLTAID014 universally āexpiresā after a fixed period.
Australian Resuscitation Council guidance recommends refreshing CPR skills at least annually.
General first aid refresher training is commonly undertaken every three years to maintain current knowledge and practical skills. However, employer, workplace, industry or regulatory requirements may differ.
Before booking refresher training, check:
- your employer's training requirements
- your workplace procedures
- any relevant industry or regulatory requirements
- whether your CPR component also needs refreshing
Do not assume every workplace follows the same renewal schedule.
