Practical Training and Assessment

The Practical Training and Assessment component of the HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting course is where participants gain the essential first aid skills needed to respond effectively in real-life emergencies. This comprehensive training is specifically tailored for childcare workers, educators, and support staff working in early learning centres, schools, and family day care environments, ensuring you are fully prepared for any situation that may arise in an education and care setting.

During the practical training, you’ll engage in hands-on activities and practical demonstrations that cover a wide range of first aid skills. Under the guidance of a qualified aid trainer, you’ll learn how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and manage asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies through emergency asthma management training and anaphylaxis management training. The simulated environment allows you to practice these specialised first aid skills safely, building your confidence and competence to respond to emergency situations.

The practical assessment is a key part of the course, where your ability to apply basic emergency life support and advanced resuscitation techniques is evaluated. This assessment ensures you meet the standards set by the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), as well as the national regulations for education and care settings. The comprehensive training covers everything from responding to medical emergencies to providing aid in an education and care setting, so you’re ready to act when it matters most.

Upon successful completion of the practical training and assessment, you’ll receive a nationally recognised first aid certificate, valid for three years. This aid qualification not only demonstrates your up-to-date first aid knowledge but also ensures you are equipped with the essential and specialised first aid skills required to provide effective aid response in any childcare or educational environment. With this comprehensive training, you’ll be ready to respond effectively and confidently to first aid emergencies, supporting the safety and wellbeing of children in your care.

FAQs About Childcare First Aid Courses

What first aid qualifications do childcare workers need in Australia?

All childcare workers must hold current, approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training in accordance with the Education and Care Services National Regulations. The most commonly required qualification is HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting, which includes paediatric CPR and emergency response for asthma and anaphylaxis. Services must ensure trained staff are immediately available at all times children are in care.

How often does childcare first aid training need to be renewed?

While HLTAID012 units do not technically expire, industry and regulatory guidance states that CPR must be refreshed every 12 months, and full first aid and anaphylaxis/asthma training must be renewed every 3 years. Many providers follow ACECQA and Best Practice guidelines to ensure ongoing competency.

Can first aid training be delivered onsite at our childcare centre?

Yes. We provide onsite childcare first aid training for groups of 10 or more educators across Melbourne, Geelong and Regional Victoria. This allows staff to complete their compliance training on a day and time that suits operations, with minimal disruption to children’s routines.

Do you offer weekend or evening courses for educators?

Absolutely. We understand that childcare staffing ratios and rosters can make weekday training difficult, so we offer flexible scheduling, including after-hours and weekend sessions at both public venues and onsite.

Is HLTAID012 the same as paediatric first aid?

Yes. HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting covers paediatric first aid, including emergencies involving infants and young children. It also includes asthma and anaphylaxis response training to meet National Quality Framework compliance requirements.

Where are your public first aid course locations?

We have a growing network of training venues across Melbourne, Geelong and Regional Victoria. Educators can enrol individually online, making it easy to keep first aid qualifications current even if only one or two staff need renewal at a time.

Do you provide certificates for audit and compliance records?

Yes. All participants receive nationally recognised certificates, and we help services track due dates, access records and stay prepared for audits and Quality Assessments. Group coordinators can receive consolidated reporting for their service.

Are trainers experienced in childcare emergency scenarios?

Yes. Our trainers have specialist experience working with early childhood environments, teaching real-world responses to incidents involving infants, toddlers and young children — improving staff confidence in emergency situations.

What happens if I have educators unable to attend on the day of training and the final number is less than 10

We understand that these situations can occur and are focused on offering flexible solutions. All group charges must have a minimum of 10 participants charged however if your numbers do fall below that, you will also be provided with a credit voucher for the value of the unused training, these vouchers can be used to book into training at any one of our public venues and are valid for 3 years. This ensures you are not out of pocket and the staff still get the training they need.

Can we pay by invoice for our childcare centre?

Yes. Approved childcare services and early learning organisations can request invoice payment terms. Simply let our team know when booking and we will arrange invoicing aligned to your organisation’s requirements.

How do we book a group first aid course at our centre?

Booking is simple — submit a Group Booking Request or call us directly. We’ll help you choose a suitable date, confirm participant numbers and run the session at your centre or one of our venues. We also support multi-site organisations in Victoria with coordinated training and compliance tracking. All cleints will be assigned a Training Consultatnt that will be your dedicated point of contact and assist you with all of your current and future training needs.

Do you offer training for smaller centres or only large groups?

Our minimum charge for a group booking is for 10 participants, however centres are welcome to invite neighbouring centres or parents and carers to participante in the training to make up the numbers. Alternatively, we have our public course venes available for individual or small group bookings.

How far in advance do I need to book my group training?

We recommend scheduling 2–4 weeks ahead, especially for weekends and after-hours sessions. However, if your educators need urgent renewals, our team will do everything possible to accommodate short-notice bookings.

Can we combine CPR only and First Aid into one session?

Yes. We commonly run HLTAID012 + CPR only together to streamline training time and minimise staffing disruption. Our team can discuss the best delivery model to suit your operating hours.

Do you manage reminders for certificate renewals?

Yes. We support ongoing compliance with digital record-keeping and renewal reminders — helping you stay ahead of audits and staffing requirements. All clients will have access to their own dedicated client portal, this will allow them to view qualifications, print certificates, generate reports, manage group bookings, enrol staff in publc courses and much more.
