Course Description
Develop the skills and knowledge required to safely support a person requiring shallow oral suctioning. This practical course is designed for disability support workers, aged care workers, healthcare assistants and other support professionals who assist individuals with managing oral secretions. Learn how to recognise when suctioning may be required, understand airway safety, follow an individual suctioning plan, prepare equipment, and perform shallow oral suctioning using safe, person-centred techniques.
This course covers suction equipment, Yankauer and soft suction devices, positioning, infection control, cleaning and maintenance, documentation, recognising complications and knowing when to stop and seek assistance. Participants will build confidence in providing safe respiratory support while understanding their role, responsibilities and the importance of following workplace procedures, manufacturer instructions and the personās individual care requirements.
